The VIII Summit of the Disease Surveillance Network (DSN) in Deauville, on the 5th Octobe 2024, convened top veterinarians and epidemiologists to discuss the latest advancements in equine health. Hosted by RESPE and sponsored by Fluxergy and Dechra, the event spotlighted innovative strategies and research in equine disease management.
A key presentation by R. Newton (UK) focused on the role of point-of-care (POC) testing, examining its potential to revolutionize equine diagnostics with rapid, on-the-spot results. The talk framed POC testing as a transformative tool for the DSN. F. Wolfhender (Switzerland) provided an essential overview of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), detailing the current situation and control measures in Switzerland. Meanwhile, O. Kutasy (Hungary) updated participants on the challenges in preventing West Nile virus (WNV) outbreaks across Europe, highlighting the complexities of managing unexpected cases.
Equine antimicrobial resistance was addressed by E. Mendonsa (Fluxergy), who emphasized the importance of health informatics in tracking resistance patterns. Mendonsa also discussed the evolving landscape of POC PCR testing for equine pathogens, sharing insights on its current and future applications.
The summit concluded with M. Llorca (Spain) shedding light on the Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE) epizootic in South America, examining lessons learned for better outbreak prevention.
